The mining history of Lavrio dates back to antiquity, experiencing intermittent operations until 1865 when an Italian-French company attempted to exploit substantial amounts of “slags and ejecta” left from ancient mining activities. This initiative marked the establishment of the town of Lavrio, transforming it into an industrial hub attracting people from all parts of Greece and various foreigners seeking employment.
While the mines are no longer operational today, Lavrio continues to thrive at its own tranquil pace. Located just 5 km from the SOUNION VILLA, the city offers a delightful experience for visitors. A leisurely walk through the port city, a stop at one of the bars for coffee and cake, indulging in delectable seafood, and enjoying Greek wine or ouzo at the numerous charming tavernas are some of the pleasures awaiting exploration.
Additionally, visitors are encouraged to explore the town’s Archaeological Museum, where they can witness relief slabs from the frieze of the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion. The Mineralogical Museum is a unique gem, housing rare and beautiful minerals from the Lavreotiki land, making it a must-see attraction.
